Leipzig 1813
La Bataille de Leipzig 1813 Special Unit Types and Formations
There are numerous major and minor rivers as well as streams and swampland that make up the low lands between the Rivers Elster and Pleisse. Additionally the lowland along the Partha is a major barrier to infantry and cavalry. There are limited roads between the two sides of the wetlands and the critical roadway between the two urban areas of Lindenau and Leipzig contains a causeway which is raised above the water level of the surrounding swamps and a series of 6 bridges.
The Parthe, Elster and Pleisse River
The Elster, Pleisse and Parthe are major watercourses on the battlefield and as such are considered impassable river hex sides. River crossings by any combat formation or leader may only be made at a bridge, or alternately by infantry in skirmish formation moving directly from one clear terrain hex to another clear terrain hex directly across the river. Following the river crossing, the skirmisher must make an unmodified morale check and if successful stands in place. However, if the skirmisher fails the morale check it is immediately placed back on the opposite side of the river and a single die is rolled to determine the increment number of casualties suffered. Cossaque regiments may also cross these major rivers in the manner as outlined for the skirmisher. The exception to that rule being the Cossaque must first pass a morale check prior to making the crossing. If the regiment is successful, it crosses; and if it is successful a second time, it stands in place, If it fails either of the morale checks, then it reverts to its position on the original side of the river and rolls 1 die for number of increments lost. The causeway is an elevated roadway including bridges of various sizes and lengths that runs from Leipzig to Lindenau in Saxony. Combat units may only enter the causeway via road movement or via an infantry assault by melee. Combat units that may form skirmish order may exit the causeway by making a formation change to skirmish order and moving out of the road hex into the adjacent hex of swamp or clear terrain. Fire defense of any unit on the causeway is 4. Infantry may melee onto the causeway or from one causeway hex to another if a leader of the infantry formation is present in the assaulting hex. Defenders are in Road March , and attackers are considered in column. Units that suffer a disorder or rout result in any morale check will attempt to make their full move to return in the direction from which they first entered the causeway. As the disordered or routed unit move back toward their original starting place, every friendly occupied hex they move thru checks morale, minus 6 from the die roll. If they encounter enemy units, then they will surrender to them. Liepzig-Lindenau Causeway
