La Bataille de Deutsch Wagram 1809

Memorable Year 1809–France versus Austria

victory. The Austrians retreated into Bohemia. A brief battle in Znaim, Bohemia about two weeks later encouraged Karl to seek a peace, which was signed at Schönbrunn.

Chemical Combustion In Human Relationships

Between Wagram and Schönbrunn, French and allied leadership would have enjoyed the arts in Vienna. Perhaps Beethoven’s Harp Quartet might have been played since it was written in 1809. In opera, the Italian Spontini would be putting the finishing touches on Fernand Cortez which would debut in Paris in November. The great French Romantic Chateaubriand would publish Les Martyrs in 1809. In Germany, von Goethe would publish Elective Affinities about the chemical combustion which occurs in human relationships in the Memorable Year 1809. Not unlike the chemical combustion between Imperial and Revolutionary France and the Ancien Regime of reactionary Austria.

The Nobility and the Clergy on the backs of the People

Two last little bits of chemical combustion in the explosion between France and Austria…first, the Black Duke of Brunswick-Luneberg would gather a group of partisans dressed in black and they would attempt to raise havoc and rebellion in a swath of territory from Bohemia through Saxony and then Westphalia in the summer of 1809…sort of a British sponsored set of fireworks which fizzled out prematurely on the Fourth of July or Guy Fawkes Day. Then, the last chemical reaction was the British invasion of Walcheren in the French occupied Netherlands. Here, Bernadotte, in his last French hurrah before drifting over to Sweden, managed to cause the English efforts to relieve some pressure on the Austrians sputtered out. The British invasion fizzled out due more to disease than French skill. The War of the Fifth Coalition ends with a whimper
