Memorable Year 1809–France versus Austria
French General Mathurin-Leonard Duphot, commander of the French troops in the Cisalpine Republic, was sent to Rome in early 1797 to work with French Ambassador to the Papal States, Joseph Bonaparte. Their task was to incite for the revolutionary cause in Rome and the Papal States. Duphot was a dedicated revolutionary and had written the poem Ode aux Mânes des Héros Morts pour la Liberté (Ode to the Manes of Heroes Who Died For Liberty). He was engaged to the legendary Desiree Clary. While at St. Helena, Napoleon said of Duphot, “he was a general of the greatest promise, he was virtue itself. In December of 1797, during a disturbance in Rome instigated by both Duphot and Ambassador Bonaparte, Duphot was killed by a Roman mob.
