La Bataille de Deutsch – Wagram 1809
Marshal Massena
Marshal Massena was injured touring Lobau Island with Napoleon, several days before the battle. He conducted his command of the IV Corps from his carriage during the Battle of Wagram and that requires some special considerations.
Marshal Massena is represented by two unique counters; his personal a’ pied counter that has a movement of two and his carriage dans un chariot counter which has a movement of seven.
Marshal Massena a’ pied
This counter moves as an infantry unit but may always move one hex. In all other aspects it is treated as a leader counter.
Marshal Massena dans un chariot
This counter moves with all the restrictions of horse artillery. The carriage has a fire defense of 10 and has 3 “increments” available before it is destroyed. When destroyed (3 increments lost), Marshal Massena’s dans un chariot counter is removed and the a ’pied counter is used. Of course there is a possibility of a leader casualty when the carriage is fired upon. The carriage does not have a melee defense value. The carriage counter may be stacked with any other unit and does not count against stacking or additions to the die roll for fire combat The carriage retreats with the unit it is stacked with, as any other leader counter. The carriage is the last to lose “increments” in a stack , in combat a la feu or melee. The carriage may be repaired (back to 3 increments again) by losing one increment from any French or Allied horse battery or captured (surrendered) Austrian battery. Once repaired, the Marshal may climb into the carriage again.
