…Never meant to be permanent, these organizations varied in how they were set up. Tended to come and go, and their organization might not last past a battle. High attrition and lack of training…the weakest of French infantry formations.

Provisional Legere Infantrie…

III 4

4-7

…Legere troops in name only…only slightly better than the ligne troops with all the weaknesses of the Provisional Ligne infantry.

Marin Infantrie…

VI 2

5-7

…Napoloen converted 20,000 sailors into hard-fighting and accurate musketeers, fighting mainly with Marmont till the end of the 1814 campaign. A solid group which performed well in its two years of campaigning.

VI 70

4

6-7

80 of thèse cohorts became batallions…older than typical recruits, thèse National Guard and Gendarme forces became the basis of the new régiments 134eme to 156eme...received much training in summer and fall of 1812 in Napoleon’s anticipation of his need in 1813. Performed better than anticipated troughout 1813 & 1814

Ligne Infantrie…

V 6

2

5-7

Standard French organization of regular infantry. Well trained and often taken as drafts from Spain and other théâtres. Not enough of them to replace horrendous Russian losses and attrition from early 1813 battles.

VI 37

3

Legere Infantrie…

6-8

…Standard French organization of light troops. Like their ligne counterparts, often taken from Spanish fronts and other locations…just not enough of them.
