La Bataille de Bautzen 1813
The Memorable Year 1813 While the Emperor Napoleon and Tsar Alexander were quibbling over carp ponds in eastern Saxony, there were other things going on in the world. Here is a review of the world’s events traveling eastward from Central Europe back through Russia into the Far East and then back again to Europe. The great age of Russian writers and composers still had several decades before its presence would be known; but one Russian, Pavel Svinyin, would leave his mark on the Russian arts from the time of the Patriotic War of 1812. Assigned to the Russian consulate in Philadelphia from 1811-1813, Svinyin wrote his Sketches of Moscow and St. Petersburg, which was first published in English in Philadelphia. He also wrote about black music in the new United States. Svinyin also was an aide to General Moreau upon Svinyin’s return from Philadelphia.
Svinyin painted this Osage Elder while in Philadelphia
